Inner Child Healing: The Road to Transforming Your Life
WHAT IS INNER CHILD HEALING?
Inner child healing is a therapeutic process aimed at addressing and healing emotional wounds, traumas, and patterns that originated in childhood. The concept is based on the idea that our early experiences shape our beliefs, behaviors, and relationships later in life. Inner child healing involves reconnecting and nurturing the wounded aspects of us that were formed during childhood. Essentially, it’s a decision we make as adults to work through, let go, and forgive our caregivers for what they were unable to provide when we needed it most.
6 WAYS TO APPROACH INNER CHILD HEALING WORK
Speaking from personal experience, here’s what has worked for me:
Becoming Your Own Caregiver
As an adult, I realized that I am now my own caregiver. It’s my responsibility not to neglect, traumatize, abandon, or verbally or emotionally abuse myself. I help the child within me understand that parents are just people with their own unresolved issues. If they didn’t have the resources and knowledge back then to give to themselves, then how could they provide it to you? Perhaps if they could, they would have. Shifting my perspective helped me gain clarity and begin the healing process.
Exploring Creative Outlets
One of the first tools I used was painting. You don’t have to be an artist or have any skills to benefit from expressive painting. The goal is to freely play with colors, splash paint around, and let your emotions flow. When you look back at your creation, it often reflects how you’re feeling. For creators, art lovers, or anyone who enjoys painting, this is a fantastic way to release negative energy and express emotions that words can’t capture. After all, what child doesn’t enjoy art and playing with paint?
Journaling with a Twist
Journaling can be incredibly therapeutic, especially with a specific prompt. Start by writing from your inner child’s perspective. Express how you felt as a child—things you couldn’t say, feelings that were dismissed, or moments when you felt ignored. Then, respond to your inner child as the compassionate adult you are now. Reassure your inner child that their feelings are valid and offer the comfort and understanding they needed back then. When I did this exercise, I experienced a breakthrough, realizing the extent of my resentment and how much I needed to release it.
Trying Hypnosis
Hypnosis, which is like guided meditation, works with the subconscious mind to reprogram negative patterns. While guided meditation focuses on the present moment, hypnosis helps address the underlying habits and thought processes that originate in the subconscious. If meditation hasn’t been effective for you, hypnosis might be worth exploring. It has been surprisingly helpful in my healing journey.
Using Affirmations & Mantras
Affirmations and mantras are powerful tools to keep you focused and motivated. They serve as reminders of your purpose and the path you’re on. I keep affirmations and goals in the note’s app on my phone. When I’m feeling stuck or discouraged, I read them to remind myself of my strength and capabilities. For additional support, I’ve created guided meditations and plan to add more healing mantras and affirmations to my you tube playlist. In the meantime, check out my inner child healing affirmations video on my channel linked below. I promise you wont regret it.
Being Vulnerable (Its Not Always a Bad Thing)
Being vulnerable has been one of my greatest challenges. Past experiences of betrayal and hurt led me to build walls and keep others at a distance. However, I’ve learned that vulnerability is essential for growth. Setting boundaries and practicing discernment have helped me lower those walls.
